Family Promise of North Dekalb

The mission committee is exploring opportunities to assist Family Promise of North Dekalb, which partners with local congregations, individuals, families, foundations and corporations to provide emergency shelter and viable solutions for families with children who are facing a housing crisis. The mission of Family Promise is to engage community and faith-based organizations in ENDING HOMELESSNESS … one family at a time.

The week of June 9 – June 16, 2019 we have the opportunity to volunteer for this mission by helping at Kingswood UMC to set-up/break-down, greet, feed and fellowship. If you are interested in volunteering, you can sign up at this link or contact Cheryl Atkins (atkins@us.ibm.com or 678-231-7554) to assist with meals which have already been committed.

Camp Glisson Work Trips
Camp Glisson is a ministry of the North Georgia Conference that works with children, youth and adults. Each year, we send a small team to Camp Glisson to in the Fall and Spring to help with repairs and construction needs for the upcoming season.
Meals on Wheels
The former Meals on Wheels organized by Senior Connections has been replaced by Open Hand Atlanta. You can volunteer to pack meals or to deliver meals directly with Open Hand. Just select the “Individual Volunteer” option and choose a date and time that works with your schedule.
Rise Against Hunger
Annually, in the spring, we host an event in which we pack meals to help end world hunger.

On April 19, 2019, Chamblee First UMC teamed with Rise Against Hunger to pack over 15,000 meals. Each meal serves 6 people so our event will touch the lives of 90,000 people! Curious as to where the meals go once they leave our fellowship hall? Check out the Rise Against Hunger: Meals with Impact video for an inside look at the journey of a meal from planning, setup, assembling, packing, distribution and ultimately preparation and consumption by those we wish to serve.

Pizza & Packing Events
Over the course of the year, we often have the opportunity to respond to a need in the world. We recently started hosting mission events on a Friday night to package UMCOR relief kits to assist those affected by disaster.
Thanksgiving Food Drive
Our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive is one of our largest outreach projects of the year. In the past years, this food drive has provided at least a week’s worth of food for needy families at Thanksgiving. You can support this mission by donating food, funds or your time.
Christmas Mission
Each year we partner with other ministry organizations to provide gifts for children in need. For the past two years we have worked with Murphy Harpst Children’s Center
Malachi Storehouse Partnership
Our church partners with a local organization that is dedicated to addressing food insecurity in Metro Atlanta. We provide volunteers, financial assistance, and donated goods throughout the year. Learn more about our this amazing organization here.
Missionary Support
Throughout the year we provide monthly financial support for the Warnock’s. They are a United Methodist missionary couple. Read more about their story here
